How it works

The national competition and qualification for the International Geography Olympiad (iGeo) involves two qualification rounds:


1. Preliminary round

2. Swiss final


The 2022 national prequalification for the iGEO 2023 in Indonesia will take place from 5th to 11th May 2022. More information will be published latest in April 2022.


Preliminary round

is conducted online and independently by each school. The examination lasts 20 minutes and consist of 30 to 40 English multiple-choice questions from all areas of geography. Supervision during the preliminary round is organized by the schools themselves. Participants need an internet-capable device (i.e. desktop computer, tablet, smartphone) for this.

Swiss Final

The best 20 students of the first online exam who meet the conditions for participation will be invited to a camp week and the Swiss final, where the best four students representing Switzerland at the iGeo2023 will be chosen.

Conditions for participation

The qualification is open for pupils that:

•    are at least 15 years old but not older than 18 years on the 30th of June 2022 and
•    attend a school (not higher than secondary level) in Switzerland until the summer 2023 throughout the whole period from the preliminary round (May 2022) to the iGeo in August 2023
•    and have not taken part two times at an iGeo
